Lucy had been collaborating with Susan Birkenhead and Emily Maan on the musical version of the 2017 Netflix film Our Souls At Night, On Cedar Street, before the advancement of her illness. The project is still active.
From 1962, when she made her operatic debut at the New York City Opera as Mozart’s Cherubino, through 1986, Joanna Simon routinely appeared on opera and concert stages. She played the lead in the Seattle Opera’s world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri’s Black Widow. And began recording with orchestras in 1972, performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic, among others.
Joanna Simon worked as the arts correspondent for PBS’s MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour after semi-retiring from music in 1986 and continued to do so until 1992. Her story on the relationship between bipolar disease and creativity won her a 1991 Emmy Award. She later worked in the real estate industry.
Joanna Simon was Walter Cronkite’s companion from 2005 until he died in 2009. She married novelist and journalist Gerald Walker from 1976 until he died in 2004.
The photographer Peter Simon, the brother of Lucy and Joanna Simon, died of a cardiac arrest in 2018 at 71 following a battle with cancer.

On June 25, 1943, Simon was born in New York City. Richard L. Simon, her father, was a co-founder of Simon & Schuster and an accomplished pianist who frequently performed Beethoven and Chopin at home. Andrea (née Heinemann) is a singer and civil rights advocate.
Her mother was a Catholic, and her father came from a German-Jewish family. Her maternal grandmother, Ofelia Oliete, also known as “Chibie,” was a Catholic originally from Cuba and was of Pardo background, a freed-slave descendant. Her maternal grandpa, Friedrich Heinemann, was of German descent.
Up until the age of 16, Ofelia mainly was raised by nuns in England.
