College Career

Shamet participated in three games during his rookie season before being forced to sit out the entire campaign due to a foot injury. He started playing point guard for the Shockers in January 2017.

Shamet averaged 11.4 points and 3.3 assists per game as a redshirt freshman. He received honors like MVC Freshman of the Year and First team All-MVC recognition. Shamet underwent surgery to treat a stress fracture in his foot after the season.

Shamet was one of fifty players nominated to the Preseason Wooden Award watch list heading into his sophomore season and was selected to the Preseason First Team All-AAC. Only two sophomores were chosen for the 2018 Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 list, and he was one of them.

On December 9, 2017, Shamet helped Wichita State defeat Oklahoma State 78-66 with a career-high 30 points. Along with assists per game, actual shooting percentage, and offensive box plus/minus, Shamet was the AAC leader in several other statistics.

Each season he played, he also assisted in guiding the Shockers to the NCAA Tournament. As a sophomore, he contributed 14.9 points and 5.2 assists per game. He declared for the 2018 NBA draft after the season.

Professional Career

Philadelphia 76ers 

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Shamet as the 26th overall choice in the 2018 NBA Draft. Shamet scored an average of 8.8 points per game during the 2018 preseason, including 18 points in a 120-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in China.

On January 8, 2019, Shamet came off the bench to score a career-high 29 points in the Sixers’ victory over the Washington Wizards at home, setting a rookie record with 8 three-pointers.

Los Angeles Clippers 

Shamet was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers on February 6, 2019. He scored 17 points in his debut game with them, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter as they rallied from a 28-point deficit to beat the Boston Celtics.

He contributed 12 points to a 31-point rally that helped the Clippers defeat the Golden State Warriors 135-131 on April 15 in Game 2 of the first round. He tested positive for COVID-19 on July 4, 2020.

Shamet turned his ankle in the first quarter of Game 7 of the second round of the NBA playoffs, forcing him to leave the game after only six minutes. The Clippers were eliminated after losing to the Denver Nuggets 104-89.

Brooklyn Nets 

In a three-team trade that sent Luke Kennard to the Clippers on November 19, 2020, Shamet was acquired by the Brooklyn Nets. Shamet changed his jersey number from 13 to 20 on January 14, 2021, because James Harden, who the Nets had developed in a trade, preferred to wear that number.

Phoenix Suns 

Shamet was given to the Phoenix Suns on August 6, 2021, in exchange for Jevon Carter and Day’Ron Sharpe’s draft rights. He agreed to a four-year, $43 million rookie scale agreement with the Suns on October 18.
