Gabrielle Union discussed her previous marriage to former NFL player Chris Howard on the January 2 episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. She said that their relationship should never have progressed beyond the dating stage. The 50-year-old actor said her previous marriage was “dysfunctional from day one.” She has been married to NBA player Dwyane Wade since 2014.

Union retorted that she wasn’t precisely “wife of the year” during her marriage to Howard after Shepard, who has been married to actress Kristen Bell since 2013, brought up his guilt about prior affairs.
She recalled her previous marriage, saying that neither she nor her husband thought their relationship should suffer because of it. A portion of it followed his actions and asked, “Oh, is that what you’re doing? You’ll experience this one. And I just thought I had a right to it.

Union said she also felt she was getting what was rightfully hers due to her professional triumphs. I took care of all the bills. I was working myself to the bone and believed that was what would come, the fruits of prosperity.
Howard and Gabrielle Union were wed from 2001 to 2006 after meeting at a party in 1999.
