Aldrin had three marriages and three divorces. In 1954, he married Joan Ann Archer, and the couple was married for 20 years until divorcing. From 1975 to 1978, he married Beverly Van Zile, and from 1988 to 2012, he married Lois Driggs Cannon.

With Joan Ann, he has three children: James, Janice, and Andrew, as well as one grandson, three great-grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.

After participating in the Apollo 11 lunar mission to the moon with fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins in July 1969, Aldrin became a household figure worldwide.

In 2009, he said: “[People] want us in a few words to generate the enthusiasm that the world had as they contemplated what we were about to do.”

“Well, what it felt like is something that we trained for. We were trying to treat it as calmly as we could and perform to the best of our ability.”

He was the second man to set foot on the moon and is the only one of the three still living today. Aldrin left NASA in July 1971 to become the commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School at the Edwards Air Force Base in California.
