Adele Joins James Corden For Final Carpool Karaoke!

James Corden got the best possible ending to “Carpool Karaoke” because of Adele. But take heed—it’s emotional.

The Grammy-winning best friend and regular guest of the Late Late host surprised him with an impromptu final episode of his beloved show as he neared the conclusion of his eight-year stint on CBS.

The two became emotional as they discussed their lives, professions, and enduring friendship.

Adele unexpectedly visits Corden’s home on Monday, April 24, and wakes him up in the morning with a loud cymbal crash in the opening scene of the YouTube video. Still half sleeping, the singer assured her friend, “Last week of shows, I’m going to drive you to work!”

When they were in the car, the two started singing along to some of Adele’s biggest hits, including “Rolling in the Deep” and “Love Is a Game,” with Corden driving.

The late-night host remembered how, when he initially launched the now wildly popular Carpool Karaoke segment on his show in 2015, “everyone on planet Earth said no” as they drove.

“Then suddenly, Mariah Carey said yes,” he recalled, later adding: “Stevie Wonder changed it a lot because when he did it, other artists were like, ‘Well if Stevie Wonder’s done it, I’ll do it.’”

However, the atmosphere became gloomy when Adele’s “I Drink Wine” appeared in their karaoke repertoire. The singer said the song was influenced by an emotional chat she and Corden had while returning from a combined family trip over a year and a half after it was released.

In a six-hour talk with her during the car ride, Corden admitted to her that he was feeling overburdened by “work stuff and the internet, and all those things.” This confession eventually served as the basis for the song “I Drink Wine.”

He gushed to Adele about the song, claiming that “it was everything I was feeling that day.” I was astounded by how you captured my entire state of mind on life and myself in a single line.

“It was the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable for just being an adult,” Adele recalled through tears, Corden getting choked up next to her. “The year before, I left Simon [Konecki] and stuff like that. But you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me.”

“You’re my best friend in the whole world,” she told him upon arriving at the CBS studios. “I’m going to miss you so much.”

In a farewell interview with Variety, Corden—who recently hosted BLACKPINK and Diddy as two of his final ever Carpool Karaoke guests—spoke candidly about how much Adele’s surprise meant to him.

“The fact that she came and did that for me. The fact that it was her idea to say, ‘well, why don’t I drive him to work?’ It’s really special,” he told the publication. “Because what you’re actually watching is two friends who moved to Los Angeles, I think a week apart. And one of them is going home and one of them is staying. That’s hugely emotional. It just so happens that one of them is the biggest singer in the world.”
