Natalie McIntyre gave birth to Macy Gray in 1967 in Canton, Ohio. When Gray was a baby, her father, Otis Jones, abandoned the family. A brother and a sister make up her family. Gray began musical training at the age of seven.
As she progressed through her adolescent years, she enrolled in a number of different high schools, eventually being expelled from one for disruptive conduct. While attending USC, Gray focused on screenwriting after graduating from Canton South High School in 1985.

Gray met Joe Solo, a composer and producer, while she was working as a cashier in Beverly Hills. The two of them collaborated on a songbook. Gray got gigs singing in jazz cafés around Los Angeles thanks to the demo recording that came out of it. Atlantic Records signed her later on, but she was eventually dropped from the label when the person who signed her left.
Upon her 1997 return to Ohio, the senior vice president of the Zomba Label Group in Los Angeles persuaded her to pursue music again. She started writing and recording new songs based on her experiences after being signed to a development deal. Epic Records signed her in 1998.

While Gray was just starting out in her career as a mortgage broker, she was married to Tracy Hinds for about four years. The couple later divorced. They were married and had Mel, Aanisah, and Happy as their children.
Gray listed her expansive San Fernando Valley residence for approximately $4.5 million in 2006. A basketball court, spa, pool, and dome ceiling were some of the features of this 10,000-square-foot Colonial-style home. There were also seven bedrooms and nine and a half bathrooms.
