USC’s Heisman-Winning Tailback Charles White Dies At 64!
Charles White, a renowned USC tailback and 1979 Heisman Trophy winner, passed away on Wednesday. He was 64.
Charles White, who has 6,245 career rushing yards for the Trojans, passed away, according to USC. The nine-year NFL veteran passed away in Newport Beach, California, from cancer, according to the school.
John Robinson, White’s former head coach at USC and with the Los Angeles Rams, said of him, “He was the toughest player I’ve ever taught.” “In that sense, he was truly unusual. He was a fantastic player who genuinely enjoyed the game. Those are the things I can most clearly recall. He was a really difficult person and a very talented athlete. But the tenacity, outstanding!”

White, a two-time All-American and native of Los Angeles, won a national championship in 1978 before winning the Heisman Trophy the following year when he captained the Trojans and had the most rushing yards in the country. Each of White’s final three seasons saw him finish first for the Trojans in rushing. After his senior year, he also received the Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Pop Warner honors.
In both of the games after the 1978 and 1979 seasons, he was awarded the Rose Bowl MVP. The third of USC’s record eight Heisman winners, White is still held in high respect at the institution formerly known as Tailback U.

One of the greatest Trojans of all time, according to USC athletic director Mike Bohn, was Charles White. He “made USC proud sporting the Cardinal and Gold,” according to the Rose Bowl icon, two-time unanimous All-American, and NCAA record holder.
Cleveland selected Charles White with the 27th overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft. He played for the Browns for five seasons, missing the whole 1983 campaign due to injury. He played four more seasons for the Rams under Robinson after joining them in 1985, concluding his NFL career with 3,075 rushing yards.
He again worked for Robinson, who had returned to the Trojans, and coached USC’s running backs from 1993 to 1997 after his NFL retirement. He worked in the Trojans’ athletic department’s administration as well.
The five children Charles White had with his ex-wife Judianne White-Basch, as well as a granddaughter, are all still living. Information on the memorial service is still forthcoming.
