When Did Russell Young Start His Career?
Young stopped shooting and directing in the 1990s and began to paint professionally. He moved to New York in 1998, rented a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and started working on a series of “Combine Paintings,” collages made of collected objects and graffiti.
He launched the “Pig Portraits” series in 2001. He had managed the mug photographs of politicians, entertainers, and actors and blown them up into portraits of Sid Vicious, Elvis Presley, Jane Fonda, Malcolm X, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, and Lee Harvey Oswald using silkscreen.
“It was intended that these would be anti-celebrity images. I think it’s a dig at my previous profession. as an opening. Yet, I believe they now appear better than they did throughout some sessions.” In Los Angeles’ Don O’Melveny Gallery, he debuted the Pig Portraits in 2003.
Young and his family moved back to California following 9/11. He displayed his Fame+Shame series—which documents the consequences of earlier generations’ cultural excess—alongside the Art of Elysium in 2005 at the Menotti Gallery in Los Angeles.
Diamond dust use by Young started in 2007. He inscribed crystals into the web-like pigment of his paintings’ images and named them Dirty Beautiful Things.
