On Tuesday, Ryan Gosling thanked the Academy for nominating him for best supporting actor for his role as Ken in the worldwide hit “Barbie,” but he questioned why the voters didn’t elect Robbie as best actress and Gerwig as best director.
“To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” Gosling said of the snubs in a statement provided to CBS News.
“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.”
With over $1.4 billion at the box office, the smash success became the highest-grossing film of all time. On Tuesday, it received eight nominations, one of which was for best picture. America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling were both nominated for best supporting actress.
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” Gosling’s statement read.
“And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”
Being “so happy” for Ferrera and the other “incredible artists” who worked on the film was his additional comment. The news of her Oscar nomination “stunned” and “moved” Ferrera.
Sharing Gosling’s disappointment, she told Variety that she “was incredibly disappointed” that Robbie and Gerwig did not get Oscar nominations.
“Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie made history and raised the bar with Barbie,” Ferrera told CBS News in a separate statement. “The cultural and industry impact they’ve achieved will be felt for generations and I’m so thankful to them for asking me to be a part of it.”
In addition to the best director nomination, “Barbie” received nine Golden Globe nominations. Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” took home the trophy for best original song, while the film also took home an award for greatest box office performance.
A best director Oscar nomination went to Gerwig in 2018 for her picture “Lady Bird.” That year, Guillermo del Toro took up the prize for his film “The Shape of Water.”
