Angry exchanges of words between California Governor Gavin Newsom and Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp after the shooting death of a Selma police officer.
Smittcamp blamed California’s prison system for letting Nathaniel Dixon, the alleged shooter of Selma police officers, serve less time than he was required to. But on Wednesday, Newsom reacted at a press conference where new state gun laws were announced.
“I’m sick and tired of being lectured by her on public safety — sick and tired,” Newsom said.
Dixon was released from prison due to a prison realignment rule after being sentenced to more than five years.
Smittcamp claimed in her public statement that the state’s governor and lawmakers, “Gonzalo Carrasco Jr., a Selma police officer, was shot and killed on Tuesday, according to allegations made against Dixon.
According to a representative for the governor, Smittcamp decided against prosecuting Dixon to the fullest extent of the law, “which would have meant that he was imprisoned for a very long time.-=
“So, with all due respect to her statement, she should be ashamed of herself and look in the mirror,” Newsom said.
