Jerry Richardson, who used to own the Carolina Panthers, passed away on March 2, 2023. Richardson was 86 years old when he died. He was known for a long time as one of the most powerful owners in the league.
Even though a scandal ruined his time as owner of the Panthers, Richardson was the first former player to own an NFL team since George Halas in Chicago.
Jerry Richardson Cause of Death Explained!
The Panthers said that Richardson died peacefully Wednesday night while he was sleeping.
“With the arrival of the Panthers in 1995, he changed the landscape of sports in the region and gave the NFL fans here a team to call their own,” current franchise owner David Tepper said in a statement.
In 2018, when Richardson had to sell the team because female employees said he was s*xually harassing them, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said many nice things about him.
“Jerry is one of the really, really, really outstanding men of football that I’ve ever met, and I really admire him,” Jones said.

Why Did the Panthers Remove Jerry Richardson’s Statue?
David Tepper, who owns the team now, told fans in 2020 that the statue was dangerous. At the time, protests over the death of George Floyd led to the tearing down of several figures.
“With the environment, every statue in the country was coming under attack. It just made sense at all standpoints to move that statue,” SI says that Tepper said. “I don’t think things will ever be quieted down. That’s that, nor should they, in some respects.”
Several claims were made against Richardson in a separate SI investigation. He was also said to have said racial slurs to a team scout.
