On Thursday morning, staff members subdued an active gunman at the Lund Boat Company in New York Mills.
A 21-year-old guy, a Lund employee, is being held in custody pending the filing of criminal charges in connection with the event, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
A few minutes after 7 a.m., deputies arrived at the plant.
Authorities claim that the suspect pulled out a revolver after a verbal altercation with another employee. He fired one round at the other employee, a 31-year-old man, but missed.
The suspect then pursued the victim outside, but she managed to escape.
One employee closed the door to prevent the alleged gunman from entering the facility again. According to police, the suspect may have been outside when another gunshot was discharged.
While outside, the suspect ran into another employee. Three additional workers who were there intervened to defuse the situation. While they waited for the police, two employees could tackle and held the suspect.

“The heroes in this are not law enforcement; it’s the actual workers back at Lund Boats that stopped the actual threat from growing any more than what it already is,” said Bobby Berndt, New York Mills’ Chief of Police.
According to Berndt, his officers had recently practiced an active shooter scenario at Lund Boat Company and described the setting as “surreal.”
Brunswick Corporation, which owns Lund Boat Company, released this statement regarding the incident:
Our number one priority is the health and safety of our employees and the New York Mills community. We are fortunate that there were no injuries during this morning’s incident. We are working very closely with local law enforcement in Otter Tail County and will continue to support them in their investigation. All questions regarding the incident should be directed toward local law enforcement officials. We want to thank our employees who worked quickly to respond to the situation and appreciate the outreach and support from the local community. The plant is closed for the day and will have increased security upon re-opening on Monday for the next regularly scheduled shift. Our primary focus is to support our employees during this time.
