Late on Wednesday, during an altercation inside the Westfield Valencia Town Center retail center, a man was shot and killed, and a deputy was hurt.
Around 11 p.m., deputies were called in response to a report of trespassing at the shopping mall in the 24000 block of Valencia Boulevard. At the time, the mall was shut down.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man punched the responding cop, which prompted the policeman to fire. He was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away. It was unclear if the individual was carrying a weapon.
An officer hurt during the altercation was alert and conversing with emergency personnel.
As part of the investigation, a mall section was blocked off.
