The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and 66-year-old tennis great revealed on Monday that she had been diagnosed with breast and throat cancer.
Navratilova said to the Tennis Channel, “This double whammy is dangerous but still fixable.” “I’m hoping for a good result. Even if it is unpleasant for a while, I will fight bravely.

In November, Navratilova was in Fort Worth, Texas, providing commentary for the WTA Finals, and she found an enlarged lymph node in her neck. Navratilova won 18 major championships during her Hall of Fame career. She was identified as having Stage 1 HPV-related throat cancer following a biopsy (human papillomavirus). Although unrelated, breast cancer was found during the throat cancer exams.
Navratilova has experienced cancer before. She received a ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive breast cancer diagnosis, in February 2010. A month later, she had radiotherapy for six weeks before having a lumpectomy. Navratilova had her initial cancer diagnosis and was proclaimed cancer-free six months later. It is unknown if the recent breast cancer diagnosis is a return of the disease from 2010, as no additional information was provided.
The spokeswoman for Navratilova said that both of these cancers are in their early stages and have favorable prognoses. Since Navratilova discovered her throat cancer early, it is only present in one area of her throat and has not spread to her vocal cords, which makes it usually treatable.
Navratilova won’t be attending the Australian Open, which starts on January 16, since she will begin therapy later in January. She still expects to make a few remote appearances from her home in Florida, where she was scheduled to participate as an analyst and color commentator for the Tennis Channel.
