Two High School Cheerleaders Killed in High Speed Crash

Two High School Cheerleaders Killed: Two high school cheerleaders were killed this weekend during a police chase that turned tragic, leaving a community in mourning. As a result, one officer was prosecuted.

Maggie Dunn, 17, and Caroline Gill, 15, cheerleaders at Brusly High School in Louisiana and students, were killed in the collision, which authorities claim happened during a Saturday night high-speed pursuit of a suspect in a home invasion.

Liam Dunn, Maggie’s brother, was also in the vehicle when it crashed and is currently in critical condition.

“He will require operations. Has a fractured head, a broken left wrist, a broken tabula, and a few more injuries. His father, Kenny posted on Facebook, “We are asking for prayers. Please donate blood in my honor at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

“I bet our daughter is running the show up there, even if we don’t know why God took her,”

Officer David Cauthron, 42, of the Addis Police Department was detained on Sunday and charged with two charges of reckless homicide and one count of reckless injury, according to WBRZ-TV.

As of Monday afternoon, Cauthron was still being held, per the booking papers. It was unclear if Cauthron had retained counsel who could make statements on his behalf.

The officer is currently on administrative leave and, according to district attorney Tony Clayton, “has a lot of questions relative to his speed and plain recklessness.”

We’ll start with the facts, but it’s inexcusable that these kids couldn’t begin the New Year. Clayton told WBRZ-TV. “I just don’t understand why (the cop) was pursuing this car at that pace,” the person said. This cop is dealing with some significant problems.

Clayton continued, “Stop the blasted pursuit if it endangers human life. Simply put, the risk is not worth it.

Authorities claim that while pursuing 24-year-old Tyquel Zanders, the officer struck the car carrying the teenagers, according to The Advocate.

According to the outlet, he was detained after his car stalled and was later charged with house invasion, vehicle theft, and aggravated escape. It was unclear immediately if he had hired legal counsel to speak on his behalf.

The loss “is far-reaching in our school community as Maggie’s mother, Erin Martin, and sister, Tori Hill, work at our school,” Brusly High School Principal Walt Lemoine stated in a letter to students and faculty that was also shared on social media. The older sister of Caroline is a Brusly High School senior and has younger siblings enrolled in our educational system.

The school has a Crisis Intervention Team “composed of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this,” Lemoine continued. “Their losses are sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students.” Counselors are also accessible for any pupils who need them, he continued.

Lemoine continued, “Students who require additional help in the form of individual or small group therapy will be assisted by school experts throughout the day on Tuesday.” The school will begin the day with an assembly.

In the meantime, the girls’ high school cheering squad posted on Facebook, pleading for the neighborhood to remember the victims’ families.

Please keep their families, friends, and the BHS community in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve the untimely losses of Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, the statement asked. “Their zeal and radiant grins will be missed more than words can express.”

According to the Facebook page, a candlelight vigil at the high school football field is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m..
