How Did William Barr Build His Net Worth?
Barr began his career in law by working as a clerk for a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He later became a partner with the law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge.
Except for 1982–1983, when he served as Reagan’s Deputy Assistant Director for Legal Policy on the domestic policy staff, he remained there from 1978 until 1989. Richard Thornburgh, the attorney general at the time, resigned the following year and was elevated to deputy attorney general. Bush eventually nominated Barr for the position of Attorney General, and the Senate unanimously approved his nomination.
He was sworn in on November 26th, 1991. The Senate confirmed Barr with unanimous support because of his reputation among Democrats and Republicans.
Barr advocated for a greater incarceration rate in the United States during his first tenure as Attorney General because he believed it would help reduce crime. In 1992, he also started a scheme to monitor Americans’ every foreign phone call.
The program went live before anyone examined its legitimacy. In light of the ongoing investigation into his involvement in a plot to deceive Congress and the American people, he recommended that Bush grant a pardon to Reagan’s defense secretary, Caspar Weinberger.
Barr joined GTE Corporation as executive vice president and general counsel when Bush’s stint in office ended. During his 14 years in office, he oversaw the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic which eventually became Verizon Communications. To seek retirement, Barr departed Verizon in 2008.
Before his present position as an advisor to corporations on government enforcement concerns and regulatory information, Barr worked briefly for the law firm Kirkland & Ellis in 2009 and from 2010 to 2017.
Barr has long been a vocal supporter of President Trump, often speaking out against judicial or investigative efforts to undercut Trump’s administration.

During his time as Trump’s AG, several journalists have claimed that William Barr has done more than any other AG in the preceding half-century to bring the DOJ closer to the White House. This fits with Barr’s general support for sweeping executive authority.
