Helen previously dated the actor Liam Neeson from 1980 to 1985. They allegedly met in 1981 while filming Excalibur, and Liam attributes her with helping him land his first agency. However, shortly after their breakup, Helen started dating Taylor Hackford, an American director she had met while working on the 1985 movie White Nights.
Helen explained why they dated for almost ten years before being hitched in an interview with AARP in 2016. “Until I met Taylor, I had made a conscious decision to put my career above my relationships. I had met Taylor at the somewhat ripe old age of 38.”
Helen added, “We got married in the end because we realized that we were going to be together forever. We got married, ultimately, for legal reasons more than anything else. Rio sadly passed away in 2022 from uveal melanoma at 51. Helen and Taylor said they were “both inspired by the life of our son and stepson, Rio Hackford, and grieved by his loss” in a statement to People.
“His life showed us how to live in generosity and community,” they added. “He shared his life’s journey with so many who now mourn him and at the same time, celebrate their fortune in knowing him.”
