On May 16, 1965, Palmer defeated the New York Yankees to get his first victory. Although he only made six starts and had a 5-4 record, he spent most of the season as a relief pitcher and replacement starter. However, the Orioles elevated him to the starting rotation in 1966.
Palmer had a picture-perfect season. He has a record of 15-10 and 147 strikeouts. He won the contest against the Kansas City Athletics, which gave the Orioles the pennant.
He became the youngest player in baseball history to pitch a complete game shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series. Additionally, the renowned Sandy Koufax was his opponent on that particular day.
