After receiving his mother’s instrument when he was eight years old, he studied classical guitar for two years with a patient of his stepfather. A passion for bluegrass music blossomed in him as he played with his brother and father on weekend trips.
Brown went back to South Forsyth High School in Cumming. He attended Lumpkin County High School in Dahlonega after relocating there when he was seventeen years old. A vocal coach who met with him at church provided him with instruction during this period. As a solo artist, he began performing country and pop song covers at various locations in the area.
Brown attended the University of West Georgia for his graduate studies. His summer jobs as a camp counselor included Toccoa’s Camp Mikell and Dahlonega’s United Methodist Camp Glisson.
Start of the Zac Brown Band
Along with bassist Jacob Lawson and drummer Marcus Petruska, Brown established the Zac Brown Band in 2002. Two years down the road, he and his dad launched a restaurant and nightclub in the Lake Oconee region of Georgia. After a developer bought the business, Brown bought a tour bus and hit the road full-time.
This was followed by the debut self-titled album by the Zac Brown Band, “Home Grown.” At this point in time, the group’s lineup expanded to include Jimmy De Martini on violin and tenor vocals. While Brown was out with an injury in 2005, his friend John Driskell Hopkins filled in on bass, and the band went on to release their first number one single, “Toes.”
