He co-starred in the BBC2 series Two Greedy Italians with chef Gennaro Contaldo, in which the two would argue and taunt one other over their shared Italian heritage, and authored 22 books himself.
Carluccio grew up in northwest Italy, one of six children. Initially, he worked as a journalist in Turin. Still, he relocated to Vienna, then Germany, and finally settled in London, where he became a wine trader before devoting himself to the restaurant industry.
In 1981, after finishing second in the Sunday Times Cook of the Year competition, he built his first British restaurant, Neal Street, in London’s Covent Garden. Before it shut down in 2007, the restaurant was frequented by the likes of the Prince of Wales and Sir Elton John and was the springboard for Jamie Oliver’s culinary career.
Oliver expressed his condolences and stated he had learned of the chef’s passing “with profound grief.” He was my first boss in London 25 years ago at the Neal Street restaurant, an institution and Mecca of wild mushrooms,” Oliver stated in an Instagram post.

Carluccio was married three times; however, all three marriages ended in divorce. After two failed marriages, he found happiness with Priscilla Conran, his third wife (the sister of Terence Conran). Carluccio was interviewed by Kirsty Young on the 11 July 2008 episode of Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4.

He was depressed for a long time because of the loss of his brother and the breakdown of his marriage. When Carluccio tried to cut himself with scissors in 2008, his helper stopped him in time, saving his life. He reportedly cut himself with a bread knife, as reported by the media at the time.
Carluccio said that he felt “liberated” after his suicide attempt because “from that moment on, my mentality changed” and because he was able to “take stock of my life, and appreciate all the wonderful in it” after being admitted to the Priory clinic.
