The Duffer brothers, the show’s creators, stated in a statement accompanying the announcement of the release date for Stranger Things 4: “We developed the entire Stranger Things plot arc seven years ago. We anticipated the plot would span four to five seasons back then. We couldn’t fit it into four, but as you’ll soon see, we are rapidly approaching the end. Season 5 will be the final season, with Season 4 serving as the penultimate season.”

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer stated: “The show won’t finish with season four. We are aware of what and when the end will occur. The pandemic has allowed us to plan and decide what will work best for the presentation. We better understand how long we need to deliver the story after we started filling that out.”

In a separate interview, producer Shawn Levy stated that he and the Duffer brothers have a clear end goal and will soon divulge their strategy: “There is a plan, and it too will be shared.
