Kids often have the best insight. Following a particularly sharp remark from one of her children, Lily Allen and David Harbour decided to wed in Las Vegas.
“We were riding around at the beginning of the [coronavirus] pandemic — she has two kids, these beautiful daughters, 8 and 9 — and we were riding bikes out in the country trying to figure out what we were gonna do for the next year or however long it was going to take,” the Stranger Things star recalled during a June 2021 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “And the little one was riding along, and she was going like, ‘David, Dad, David, Dad.’ Because the ‘d’ got her confused. And the older one got very upset with that, which I understand, and she was like, ‘He’s not our dad! He’s not our dad!‘”
He continued: “And the younger one was like, ‘Well, what is he? He’s our dad.’ She’s like, ‘No, he’s not.’ ‘He’s kind of our stepdad.’ ‘No, he’s not.’ And she goes, ‘What is he?’ And she goes, ‘He’s just some guy in our lives!’ … I was like, ‘I need to marry this woman.’”
Allen and her former spouse Sam Cooper, whom she wed in 2011, have two kids together: Ethel and Marnie. She was initially connected to Harbour in August 2019, following the separation of the marriage in 2016. One year later, the Black Widow star proposed to Allen, and they wed in a Las Vegas ceremony presided over by Elvis in September 2020.
“In a wedding officiated by the king himself, the people’s princess wed her devoted, low-born, but kind credit card holder in a beautiful ceremony lit by the ashen skies courtesy of a burning state miles away during a global pandemic,” Harbour wrote via Instagram at the time, sharing photos from the ceremony and the subsequent celebration at In-N-Out with Allen’s daughters. “Refreshments were served at a small reception following.”
The “Fear” singer attributed the success of her relationship with Harbour to their communication and her sexual enlightenment. She was brutally honest about her marriage to Cooper following their separation. In October 2020, she admitted to Womanizer that “a lot of this trip was not unrelated to the breakdown of my last marriage.” In my late 20s, I undoubtedly experienced some form of sexual awakening. By the way, I’m not blaming my ex-husband for this; it was not at all his fault.

It was my fault. She added that I didn’t feel empowered and couldn’t express my needs and wants at that time. As a result, things fell apart. There is no way I want that to occur once more. I’m delighted and in love with David, and communication is critical in all aspects of our relationship.

After attending a play in London in August 2019, the Hellboy actor and Allen were initially mentioned together.
October 2019
Two months later, they appeared to confirm their relationship when they were captured kissing while on a stroll in New York City. Allen and Harbour made their red carpet debut as a pair at a Skin Cancer Foundation event only a few days after their romantic outing.
May 2020
When the “LDN” singer was spotted sporting a diamond ring in late 2019, it led to engagement rumors. Allen didn’t officially announce their engagement until May 2020, though. The My Thoughts Exactly author made light of the fact that she had a ring in a selfie she had shared at the time by saying that she was abiding by the “first rule of engagement club.”
September 2020
Harbor and Allen wed in Sin City with only Ethel and Marnie present, one day after Us Weekly reported that the couple had secured a wedding license. The “F—k You” diva accessorized her appearance with a sparkly, heart-covered manicure and donned a Dior dress with platform heels and a tulle veil inspired by the ’60s. After their wedding, the newlyweds went to In-N-Out for burgers and fries.
October 2020
“I wasn’t able at that point to communicate my wants and needs, and so things broke down [with my ex-husband],” Allen told Womanizer one month after the wedding, explaining that she and Harbour focus on communication. “I definitely don’t want that to happen again. I’m very much in love and happy in this relationship [with David], and communication in all areas is important.”
June 2021
Harbour told Jimmy Kimmel that marrying Allen was mainly influenced by his stepdaughters. The New Yorker was motivated to proceed after Ethel referred to him as “just another guy in our lives” to prevent “the emotional impact.”
July 2021
“[Stranger Things] sort of opened my heart in a lot of different ways. And one of the ways [was that] it made me realize how thin my existence was without a family,” Harbour said during a July 2021 appearance on the “That Scene With Dan Patrick” podcast. “I think there was something in Hopper that had a deep need in family. And there was something in me that had it too that I wasn’t aware of. [This] role allowed me to do that in my real life.”
April 2022
Harbour supported Allen when she received a nomination for best actress at the 2022 Olivier Awards, the British version of the Tony Awards, for her work in 2:22 A Ghost Story.
“Zaddy Warbucks and me at the #metgala2022 in @chanelofficial,” Allen wrote via Instagram in May 2022, posting a snapshot of the couple posing on the red carpet at the Met Gala. The next day, she shared a mirror selfie taken before she and Harbour headed to the event, joking, “This is the only other photo i have in my phone from met night. Sorry. I’m so bad at content.”
July 2022
I was alone in London playing Black Widow on this app, going on dates, and doing other things. The Stranger Things actor told British GQ about his introduction to Allen: “Yeah, I started texting with her; she was in Italy at the time; we got together, went on a date at the Wolseley, and it was, you know, she’s f—king wonderful.

“Lily and David are a wonderful team; they’re madly in love and so grateful to have found each other,” a source told Us. “David and Lily are wildly attracted to each other, their chemistry is off the charts, but they’re also best friends who can have as much fun chilling in front of the TV or baking with the kids together as they can on any five-star night out.”
The insider praised the Black Widow actor for playing a “great” stepfather. The insider said of Allen’s daughters, “They adore him, and he’s worked so hard to get to know them and build trust over a sustained time.”

“When I first met Lily Allen [and] we first went on a date, [at] one point [she] did say to me, ‘[I] always wanted a plain English kitchen,’” Harbour recalled during an Architectural Digest house tour with the singer. “I liked it; I liked it. I was like, ‘Alright, let’s do this.’”
