Habiba Abdul-Jabbar, the ex-wife of Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was born Janice Brown and used to go by that name. He first met Janice at a Lakers game during his final year at UCLA, when he was still going by his given name of Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr.
When Alcindor, 24 years old, decided to follow Islam, he adopted the name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The following year, Janice embraced Islam and changed her name to Habiba Abdul-Jabbar; the following year, Kareem and Janice were wed. Habiba was raised as a Christian, which is claimed to have strained her mother and father’s relationship.
Divorce
She had anticipated an easy divorce from her ex-husband before they were married, but that did not happen. Kareem’s religious leader encouraged him to marry Habiba, and in 1971 their union was formally recognized by law.
Even though they were wed, they divorced just two years into their union while the wife was still carrying their second child. The couple’s romance ended in 1978 when they both got remarried and had one child apiece from their second union.
