Is Shams Charania Indian?

Shams Charania was born in Chicago to parents who had moved there from Pakistan. Charania is not of Indian ancestry despite his Pakistani background. Despite their close proximity, Pakistan and India are two very different countries with their own histories, cultures, and identities.

Therefore, Charania’s history may be traced back to his Pakistani ancestry; nevertheless, it is important not to confuse the two national identities while describing his ancestry.

Shams Charania Career

NBA insider Shams Charania wasn’t always the most trusted voice in the media when it came to covering the league. Growing up, he followed the Chicago Bulls religiously, and it was the team’s run with Ben Gordon and Derrick Rose that inspired him to seek a career in sports journalism.

As is the norm in his field, he ceased being a fan and started paying more attention to the subjects he covered as his career developed.

Shams decided to stay in Chicago rather than move to either New York or Los Angeles, where most sports journalists start their careers, since he thought the city to be the perfect balance between the fast-paced energy of the former and the relaxed vibe of the latter.

He began covering the Chicago Bulls for ChicagoNow, a publication of the Chicago Tribune, when he was just 17 years old. Charania began writing for RealGM in 2012, and since then he has covered minor transactions all across the league. Eventually, Adrian Wojnarowski, who worked for Yahoo Sports at the time, became interested in Charania.

He joined Yahoo in the summer of 2016, and immediately began breaking stories about major deals and free agent signings, such as Dwight Howard’s move to the Atlanta Hawks, DeMar DeRozan’s re-signing with the Toronto Raptors, Luol Deng’s signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Jamal Crawford’s signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.

This prompted a healthy competition between Wojnarowski and Charania. He broke the news that Paul Millsap, Blake Griffin, Jeff Teague, and Stephen Curry had all signed with the team in 2017. On August 14, Shams announced to his Twitter followers that he will be leaving Yahoo Sports at the end of the month to join The Athletic and Stadium.
