When Katy Perry leaves American Idol, Lionel Richie is prepared to bid her go. Perry recently announced her intention to leave the singing competition series after its 22nd season, and the “Hello” singer has addressed the news.
“I’m not mad,” he declared during his Thursday appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “When I first heard about it, it made me want to run off the road,” he joked further, referring to Perry’s imminent departure. “My phone went boom.”
Before Perry revealed the news on Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Grammy winner also stated that he had no knowledge of her choice. He denied being aware of the matter but acknowledged that it was reasonable.
Put simply: My four-hundred-year storybook and music industry background are the driving force behind my passion of performing on American Idol and my enjoyment of appearing on the show with you. I have accomplished stuff.
He went on to say, The next time Katy says something like, “I want to go and create some stories,” keep in mind that she is still quite young. The key is to put in the time and effort necessary to truly be an artist.
Who will replace Perry as a judge in the upcoming season? “Listen, they’re being tight-lipped about it, and I have no idea why. But I’m telling you…” It promises to be an intriguing experience.
A playful teasing from Richie ensued. For the simple reason that, listen up: this is a fantastic program. I love sitting there with the other two of us as the wise poo-bahs, and we’re all kind of imparting knowledge that we know is real.
The kids are terrified, but we know what we’re talking about because we’re artists. The person joining the show, he continued, “must be knowledgeable and hilarious forever if they want to beat Katy.”
“I love Idol so much,” Perry said on Monday’s visit with Jimmy Kimmel, announcing that the upcoming season will be her last. It has given me a connection to the very essence of America. You know what I mean, Jimmy? I just feel the desire to get out there and feel that rhythm to my rhythm.
Although Perry would not say whether Richie and Luke Bryan were aware of her departure from Idol, she did say that they probably “figured” something was happening as she had “been in the studio for a while.”
The “Teenage Dream” singer and songwriter has stated her intention to “go and see the world and maybe bring new music” in the future, but she did not rule out a “maybe” return to American Idol.
